Spring has a way of making us want to freshen up, to clean, and to find ways to bring the wonderful warm and growing outdoors inside with us.
Moving into a new house can make decorating difficult. Maybe you haven’t discovered which boxes your decorations are in, or maybe you’re too busy unpacking more important boxes to look for the wreaths. Or, you’ve found all your decorations, but they don’t quite fit right in your new home. You have more doors, or your walls are a different color, or your pictures that used to work fine now look tiny or out of place. Don’t worry; whether you’re still busy unpacking, not sure what to do with one of your walls, or just aren’t much of a decorator, we’ve got tips for you.
Bring Spring Inside
The easiest tip of all is just to bring a little of that spring freshness inside. Cut some flowers or some budding branches from your yard, plop them in a vase, and you have an instant touch of spring wherever you are. Set it wherever you’ll feel refreshed by it, whether that’s on the kitchen island where the family hangs out, or on your bedside table so you can see it when you wake up.
If someone is allergic to flowers, or your yard isn’t in bloom quite yet, fabric flowers can also work. Pick early spring flowers that look as if you just cut them from your garden, like tulips, lilac, grape hyacynths, crocuses, daffodils and forsythia.
Add a Splash of Color
Make it feel like spring by adding some spring color to your house – yellows, light greens and blues, pinks, and purples.
Want to add color, interest, or texture to a wall but don’t want to repaint? Try buying a piece of fun fabric and sticking it to your walls with starch – it’s cheap, easy, and removable when the seasons change or you change your mind. (For more on this method, see here.) For a more three-dimensional look, you can make fabric-covered wall hangings with the blank canvas they sell at craft stores using this method.
Not a crafty person, or don’t have enough time on your hands? Vinyl wall decals are another cheap alternative to wall art. There are hundreds of stylish decals on Etsy, and you can even get personalized ones made just how you like them.
Use the Things of the Season
Even if you’re not fond of all the spring colors, you can also make it feel like spring by using spring motifs – leaves, buds, flowers, eggs, and birds. Spring can look like everything from this:
so pick things that suit your style. Using clues like nests, eggs, birds, flowers, and leaves can still give your house a spring feeling, no matter what your style is.
